Turkey Municipal elections 29 March 2009

TURKEY 29 Mar 2009 Municipal election a test for governing party's platform
The party of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Justice and Development Party (AKP), is expected to take its national lead into the municipal election, which will be seen as a referendum on national issues. The campaigns in 81 provinces, among which there are 16 metropolitan municipalities to be won, can be expected to reflect the Islamist-secularist divide in Turkey, which is a constitutionally secular country with a population overwhelmingly composed of Muslims.

The AKP's main rivals are the secularist center-left Republican People's Party (CHP) and the pro-Kurdish Democratic Society Party. The CHP is the oldest political party in Turkey. The Islamists defeated the CHP-Democratic Left Party alliance in the 2007 general election, turning the country away from its secular roots.

A Suicide Bomber Demolished a Mosque in Pakistan Pure Madness

Peshawar, Pakistan -- A suicide bomber demolished a mosque packed with hundreds of worshippers attending Friday prayers close to the Afghan border, killing at least 48 people and injuring scores more, officials said.

The attack in the Khyber region was the bloodiest in Pakistan this year and came hours before President Barack Obama was due to unveil a revised strategy expected to emphasize the need to eradicate militant havens along the Pakistan-Afghan frontier

LANDI KOTAL, Pakistan, March 27 (Reuters) - A suicide bomber killed at least 50 people when he blew himself up in a crowded Pakistani mosque near the Afghan border on Friday, government officials said.

The attack came hours before U.S. President Barack Obama was scheduled to announce a new strategy for the Afghan war, an approach U.S. officials said would also recognise Pakistan as a key part of the conflict.

Looks like praying is becoing dangerous in the Pakistani borders with Afghanistan. The problem of the suicide bombers is that they these people had become totally brainwashed. The problem at hand is to know how they have been brainwashed and working on it to stem it out.

Will the US Establish Diplomatic Relations Under Barack Obama Adminstration

It is silly thing that after all these years there are no established diplomatic relations between the US and Cuba. This is relic from the cold war era that has long been gone. One believes that the Barack administration has enough boldness to reverse the trend of the past and establish new diplomatic relations and exchange ambassadors.

Guantanamo Bay Enemy Combatant Prison Closure

Guantánamo Bay (Spanish: Bahía de Guantánamo) is a bay located in Guantánamo Province at the southeastern end of Cuba (19°54′N 75°9′W / 19.9°N 75.15°W / 19.9; -75.15). It is the largest harbor on the south side of the island and is surrounded by steep hills creating an enclave cut off from its immediate hinterland. In Britain it was historically known as Cumberland Bay.

The United States assumed territorial control over Guantánamo Bay under the 1903 Cuban-American Treaty, which granted the United States a perpetual lease of the area. The current Cuban government considers the U.S. presence in Guantánamo to be illegal and the Cuban-American Treaty to have been procured by the threat of force in violation of international law.

The Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, established in 1898, surrounds the southern portion of the bay. Since 2002 the base has hosted a detainment camp for people detained by Americans from Afghanistan and from around the world, but specifically not for captives taken in Iraq, who qualify for POW status.

International Criminal Court Arrest Warrant For Omar Bashir Ex-President of Sudan

This is an incredible intrusion of a sovereign country when indicting a president of a country. Any body could have indicted George W Bush for the hundreds of thousands who were killed in Iraq? Any one would indict the president of Israel for the massacre of thousands of Palestinians in Gaza and blowing united nation hospital sand schools?

In a challenge to one of Africa's most defiant strongmen, the International Criminal Court on Wednesday issued an arrest warrant for Sudan's president on charges of war crimes in Darfur, a quest for justice that immediately complicated relief efforts for hundreds of thousands of people and raised the specter of more violence.

A three-judge panel found that President Omar Hassan Ahmed Bashir "intentionally directed attacks against an important part of the civilian population of Darfur, Sudan, murdering, exterminating, raping, torturing and forcibly transferring large numbers of civilians and pillaging their property,".

Homes Built by The Palestinians Hundreds of Years Ago Illegal Claims Israel

In recent days, Israel has issued orders for the demolition of dozens of Palestinian homes in east Jerusalem, saying the homes were built illegally.

Palestinians say they cannot receive proper building permits from Israeli authorities, and the planned demolitions are means to assert Israel's control over the disputed city.

A Cairo Bombing Kills a 17-year-Old French Girl

Three people are in custody over a Cairo bombing that killed a 17-year-old French girl and injured 24 other people, Egyptian police said.

The homemade bomb went off Sunday evening in Cairo's Khan al-Khalili bazaar, a maze of stalls and cafes popular with tourists. The Health Ministry said most of the injured were French tourists, although three Saudis and a German, as well as four Egyptians, were also wounded. Nineteen remain in hospital.

Police said the bomb was placed underneath a bench on a busy square, and was filled with pieces of metal and nails. They said a second bomb had been found nearby and defused.

The Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt's largest opposition group, condemned the bombing.

"The Muslim Brotherhood considers that this act goes against the principles of Islam," the organization's leader Mahdi Akef said, adding that the group sought change and reform though peaceful, legal means.

A similar bombing in Cairo's historic heart in 2005 killed two tourists from France and one from the United States, and injured 18 other people, but incidents have been rare since and tourist numbers had been on the rise.
"The victim was 17-years-old and had travelled with a group of young people from Levallois,'' foreign ministry spokesman Eric Chevallier told AFP, referring to the Levallois-Perret suburb of Paris.

The families of the girl who died are expected to fly to Cairo today.

The attack struck in early evening in a street lined with cafes and restaurants in Khan al-Khalili, a 1500-year-old market that is one of the Egyptian capital's main tourist attractions, witnesses told AFP.

The teenagers were part of a group of 54 school children from Paris, aged from 13 - 17, visiting the bazaar before heading home. The dead girl, from the Paris suburb of Levallois-Perret, died in hospital. Another young man of 17 is seriously injured.

Police cordoned off the area, full of cafes and souvenir shops, and used bomb-sniffing dogs to locate a second device as worshippers were evacuated from the mosque.
Some reached Hussein hospital, a few hundred metres away, by foot. Others jumped into taxis to get to another medical facility.
The French embassy and consulate moved quickly to provide assistance to the teenagers. All of the wounded, except a 17-year-old boy, are expected to be able to fly back to Paris on MondayThey were among 54 children from France, aged between 13 and 17, visiting one of the Egyptian capital's main tourist attractions before heading home on Monday.

The night had fallen when the bomb went off at 6:30 pm just across the square from the Hussein mosque, which dates back to 1154 AD and is among Cairo's oldest places of worship.

"There was a very powerful explosion. Then screams and blood. We all started running," said Romy Janiw, 28, one of the seven adults accompanying the teenagers.

The office of French President Nicolas Sarkozy said in a statement in Paris that one French national had died and seven others had been wounded.
