Smoke Over Gaza December-30 2008

"I was sleeping with my sisters and suddenly I woke up," Reem Baloosha, 13, told me, describing the night two days ago when her five sisters were killed in an Israeli air strike.

"I found myself under the rubble, the stones were crushing me. I looked around, my sister was under the rubble, she was dead."

I visited the family in Jabaliya refugee camp in the north of the Gaza Strip.

The whole house is a pile of rubble. There is nothing but dust and stones, with a few girls' clothes and school books.

The parents do not even have photos of their dead daughters, all their pictures were lost under the rubble.

Their father, Anwar, was sitting in a mourning tent. Their mother is in total shock. She is barely conscious. They seem to be too shocked even to cry.

"If they were making rockets, I wouldn't be sad like this, but they were waiting for electricity, to study for their exams. I have eight daughters, five of them have been killed," Mr Baloosha told me.

People in Shifa hospital in Gaza City are in real misery too.

There are lots of young people who are injured, people who have lost parts of their arms or legs, or who are hooked up to drips and tubes and cannot be moved from intensive care.

Hundreds of people are coming to visit their relatives. Some of them stay in the hospital overnight, sleeping on the floor, or on chairs, or they just don't sleep.

If you look at their eyes, you can see they haven't slept for days.

Last night it was really cold, and there was heavy rain in Gaza City. Some of the hospital windows were damaged and have been covered with plastic, sheets or just left open.

There is no heating. The staff just cover the patients with sheets and blankets.

ANALYSIS / Israel's operation in Gaza is entering its problematic phase

Operation Cast Lead is entering the problematic phase of any war: The
first, surprise strike is over, the operational successes are less
impressive, and the enemy is beginning to rally. Israel would want to
continue hurting Hamas, but the goals readied before the operation are
running out and the magical aerial solutions that do not involve loss of
soldiers are coming to an end.

Top Rabbis: IDF May Fire at Civilian Rocket Source

by Hillel Fendel

(IsraelNN.com) “When lethal rockets emanate from a civilian population bordering on a Jewish town, Jewish Law permits the firing of shells at the site – after giving sufficient warning.”

This is the gist of a Halakhic [Jewish legal] ruling issued on Tuesday by four leading rabbis in various sectors of the Jewish public. Rabbi Yaakov Yosef (eldest son of former Chief Sephardic Rabbi Ovadiah Yosef), Rabbi Dov Lior, Rabbi Shalom Dov Wolpe and Rabbi Meir Mazuz are signed upon the ruling.

The ruling states as follows: “When a population living near a Jewish town sends bombs at the Jewish town with the purpose of killing and destroying Jewish existence there, it is permitted, according to Jewish Law, to fire shells and bombs at the firing sites, even if they are populated by civilians.”

No Mosques or Islamic Schools Decrees The Ultra Fundamentalist Country of Australia

The opposition by local councils to the building of Muslim schools and worship places is pushing Aussie Muslims into ghettos.

The Australian Muslim leaders are warning that repeated opposition by local councils and residents to the building of Muslim schools and worship places is pushing the sizable minority into ghettos, reported the Sydney Morning Herald on Saturday, December 27, 2008.

John Quincy Adams on Islam:

"In the seventh century of the Christian era, a wandering Arab of the lineage of Hagar [i.e., Muhammad], the Egyptian, [.....] Adopting from the new Revelation of Jesus, the faith and hope of immortal life, and of future retribution, he humbled it to the dust by adapting all the rewards and sanctions of his religion to the gratification of the sexual passion. He poisoned the sources of human felicity at the fountain, by degrading the condition of the female sex, and the allowance of polygamy; and he declared undistinguishing and exterminating war, as a part of his religion, against all the rest of mankind. THE ESSENCE OF HIS DOCTRINE WAS VIOLENCE AND LUST.- TO EXALT THE BRUTAL OVER THE SPIRITUAL PART OF HUMAN NATURE.... Between these two religions, thus contrasted in their characters, a war of twelve hundred years has already raged. The war is yet flagrant ... While the merciless and dissolute dogmas of the false prophet shall furnish motives to human action, there can never be peace upon earth, and good will towards men."

Update 8-23-06: Commenter A.M. Whittaker posts the following quote about Islam:

Winston Churchill on Islam:

How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live.

A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property, either as a child, a wife, or a concubine, must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men.

Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities, but the influence of the religion paralyzes the social development of those who follow it.

No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science, the science against which it had vainly struggled, the civilization of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilization of ancient Rome.

-- Sir Winston Spencer Churchill (The River War, first edition, Vol. II, pages 248-50 (London: Longmans, Green & Co., 1899).

Mayhem Killing of Muslims in Jos Nigeria

Nigerian police and army forces were implicated in the killing of dozens of Muslims during inter-communal clashes in Jos last month.

Nigerian police and army forces were implicated in the killing of dozens of Muslims during inter-communal clashes in the central city of Jos last month, Human Rights Watch has revealed

According to HRW, military troops were also implicated in the killing of 47 people, nearly all Muslims.

Witnesses described how four men wearing military uniforms and carrying assault rifles broke into three houses and shot dead at least 25 unarmed young men.

In another incident, at least eight Muslims were gunned down by a soldier in the Rikkos neighborhood.

"I saw a dark-green military vehicle pull up on the road with five soldiers. This was around 10 a.m.," recalls a 38-year-old engineer.

"Seven people were coming from the direction of the mosque. When they saw the military, they ran into a house."

"Seven people were coming from the direction of the mosque. When they saw the military, they ran into a house."

One of the soldiers stormed the house and brought the seven Muslim men out to the road, said the witness.

"The military man told my brother to stand to the side. He then shot the group," he added.

"He then said to my brother: ‘You go.' When my brother started moving he shot him in his leg. My brother went down. He then shot him in the side and the chest. He was shot with three bullets and died at that time."

Members of the Jamaatu Nasri Islam group later took the dead bodies to the mosque for burial.

"They were all Hausas between the ages of 18 and 25. My brother was around 40 years old," said the engineer.
JOS, Nigeria (CNN) -- Calm returned to Jos on Monday as hordes of police and military personnel descended on the central Nigerian city to enforce order after three days of deadly Christian-Muslim riots.

Soldiers patrol the streets in Jos after the riots.

Authorities imposed a 24-hour curfew on some parts of the city and a dusk-to-dawn curfew in the rest.

As day broke, people milled about and surveyed the damage from the riots. Burned-out buildings, mosques and churches greeted them. Several families were seen leaving the city, with belongings in tow.

"It's pretty clear they are definitely trying to keep the lid on things," said CNN's Christian Purefoy, who visited the area.

A local religious leader told CNN Sunday that more than 340 people have been killed in the three days of fighting. The central mosque in the city said it alone buried 209 people.

Sheikh Khalid Abubakar, the imam of the mosque, said the violence stemmed from a local election for a "government council" in which a Muslim candidate was running against a Christian candidate. The results of the election were disputed by both sides, and the disagreement sparked the clashes.

Don't Miss
300 bodies taken to mosque during Nigerian riots
"We do not feel secure," said Abubakar. "Our homes and mosques have been targeted and burned to ashes. We have many people who have been displaced."

The violence is the worst in Nigeria since 2004, when up to 700 people died in Plateau State during Christian-Muslim clashes.

Jos, the capital of Plateau State, lies in Nigeria's "middle belt," where dozens of ethnic groups live in hotly contested land separating the Muslim north from the predominantly Christian south.

Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa, is on a fault line between Islam and Christianity that crosses the continent from the Indian Ocean to the Atlantic.

The violence is a major challenge for the government of President Umaru Yar'Adua, who came to power in a 2007 election that was criticized by international observers.

Few Nigerian elections have been deemed fair since independence from Britain in 1960, and civilian rule has often been interrupted by military takeovers.

More than 10,000 Nigerians have died in sectarian violence since civilian leaders overthrew a military junta in 1999. Political strife over local issues is also common and government offices control huge revenues from the oil industry.

Artists Models Protest Nude in Paris Cold Winter for Banning Tips

Moscow Patriarch responds to Muslim scholars

[Well, now that the Holy Father's visit has wrapped up, I can turn my attention to things that caught my eye last week but got ... eclipsed.]

Remember that letter that 138 Muslim scholars wrote to Christian leaders (A Common Word), including the Pope? Well Patriarch Alexei II of the Russian Orthodox Church has given an official response. Asia News has the details:

In this letter the Russian patriarch expressed his gratitude for the scholars' initiative. He agreed that Christians and Muslims have similar goals and that they can join forces to achieve these aims.

"Today Christianity and Islam do a quite important thing—they remind mankind of God's existence and of the spiritual dimension of man and the world," Patriarch Aleksij II wrote.

At the same time '[t]his joining will not happen if there is no clarification in understanding religious values of each other. That is why I greet the striving of the Muslim community to begin sincere and open dialogue with representatives of Christian Churches on a serious scientific and intellectual level," he said.

The Vatican Opposing Cloning and Stem Research December-2008

The Vatican released a bioethics document on Friday officially updating its opposition to embryonic stem-cell research, in-vitro fertilization and human cloning.

The document also said it approved of some forms of gene therapy and encouraged stem cell research using adult cells. And it said parents could in good conscience inoculate their children with vaccines produced with cells derived from aborted fetuses.

Many in the religious sects awaited a more official ruling on new drugs that block pregnancy from taking hold.

Several of these controversial drugs like the so-called "morning-after pill" and RU-486, which blocks the action of hormones needed to keep a fertilized egg implanted in the uterus, as well as the IUD (intrauterine device), which has been in use for decades, were deemed to fall "within the sin of abortion" and are gravely immoral.

The document, by far the most authoritative of its kind from the Vatican in 20 years, said human life deserved respect "from the very first stages of its existence (and) can never be reduced merely to a group of cells."

The Vatican's overall position is formed by its belief that human life begins at conception, and must be afforded all the consequent respect and dignity from that moment on.
