Gaza Israel Assault January-02 2009

JERUSALEM -- Israel kept up its aerial bombardment of the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip for a seventh day, as diplomatic efforts to deliver a cease-fire appeared to stall Friday.

Israel has been massing artillery, armor and infantry on Gaza's borders since the start of the offensive last week, threatening a significant ground operation. But politicians are wary about starting a potentially lengthy and bloody invasion with national elections just over a month away.

Israeli leaders, however, are starting to feel a political squeeze. On Dec. 27, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert promised to bring security to southern Israel, where dozens of towns are in range of Hamas rockets, before he ends the assault. Israeli officials said they launched their offensive in response to the rocket attacks from Hamas after the expiration of a six-month cease-fire late last month.
